HOMEWORK: **Thursday you need a box of cornstarch**
Monday: Finish worksheets pages 35, 36, and 38
Tuesday: 1.write out an acronym for chemistry (I described how to do this in class but please call if there are further questions)
2. Look in your refrigerator and identify 7 items as elements, compounds, or mixtures
Wednesday: List 5 physical changes and 5 chemical changes
Thursday: Make Oobleck and write down a 5 sentence description of this amazing substance. Please include how you would label this? element, compound, solution, colloid, or suspension
(Parents if you would rather not go down this road that is fine)
recipe oobleck: 1 box cornstarch and 1 1/2 cup water (maybe a little less), mix the cornstarch into the water gradually. Mixture will become lumpy and hard to stir. Check consistency. Oobleck should flow when you tip the bowl, but feel solid when hit or rubbed across the surface. You can store in air-tight container for a few days or discard.
Synopsis of class:
Matter is what we discussed!! The basis of chemistry is the study of the composition, behavior, structures, and properties of MATTER and changes they go through. Chemistry is everywhere happening all around us and in us:) We discussed how matter is divided into substances and mixtures. We talked about the three types of mixtures (solution, colloid, and suspensions). We ended by talking about describing matter physically and chemically. After our discussion we broke up into lab groups and observed a chemical change and measured water and rubbing alcohol to show how the molecules compress.
Love the page change! Nice and wintery.
ReplyDeletewe made flubber instead of oobleck because we had no cornstarch but we did have flubber ingredients (borax & white glue). since the assignment was at parents' discretion anyway, i assumed you wouldn't mind.

ps- you should set up your comments to allow anonymous ones; otherwise people w/o one of the listed accounts can't comment. maybe more parents/kids would like to do so.
Thanks for the advice. I will look into that I am new blogging so I am still learning the ropes! Any suggestions of where to look?

You might look in Comments, if you go to Layout at the top bar when you are in your blog, then it will take you to the layout page. Just click on where the comments usually are, where it says "0 comments" or whatever, and then I think there are a bunch of settings that you can change. You can probably allow Anonymous comments there. Sorry if this doesn't work!
