CHEMICAL REACTIONS:Hydrochloric acid, open flames, matches, Copper Sulfate

Chemical Reactions!!!-We survived:)

HOMEWORK:
Monday- Get two dark copper pennies. Sprinkle some table salt on them. Drop about 5-6 drops of vinegar on the salt-covered pennies. Observe the pennies for about 20 minutes and then rinse them with water. How do the pennies look now?

Place one of the pennies in plastic wrap. Wrap the penny tightly to prevent its exposure to air. Set this penny aside. Place the other penny on a saucer. Add just enough water to the saucer so that the penny is not completely covered. Let this coin remain in the water overnight.

Tuesday- Observe the pennies. How do they compare? What caused the changes that you observed?

*ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT ARE BOLD AND UNDERLINED AND TURN IN FOR HOMEWORK

Wednesday- Study for test!!!

Thursday- Complete test:)

PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS ON THE BLOG TO RELATED SCIENCE ISSUES CONCERNING QUESTIONS AND HOMEWORK HELP.

CLASS RECAP:
Chemical reactions. Well we did it and we survived!! We brought out real chemicals and real flames -need I say more. I introduced the concept of chemical reactions and conservation of mass within a reaction. We then balanced a couple of reactions that we experimented on in class. The students were broken into 6 groups and went around the six lab stations:
1. The disappearing AL foil-using HCL acid
2. Extracting Copper from Copper Sulfate- Using Copper Sulfate, Al foil and salt
3. Exchanging Copper for Iron - Using Copper Sulfate and Iron nail
4. Creating Copper Oxide-Using a torch and a penny
5. Generation of Oxygen - Using hydrogen peroxide, yeast, and pre-lit wooden stick to watch it ignite from the Oxygen generated.
6. Converting Starch into Sugar - Using iodine, saliva and crackers

We will complete the experiments next week-Come prepared! Enjoy your weekend!

Homework

Homework:
Monday/Tuesday- Complete the element scavenger hunt worksheet. Enjoy this fun activity getting to know the elements!!

Wednesday/Thursday- Find the chemical formula for 10 household items and tell me how many atoms are in each molecule.
Example: water = H2O Therefore in one molecule of water you would have:
Hydrogen = 2 & Oxygen = 1
Look for common household ingredients like baking soda, ammonia, bleach, etc. research their chemical formula.

Class Recap:
Parents we spent most of the day solidifying the ideas presented so far. There are a number of students that have completely caught on to the new chemistry, others I felt needed some reinforcement. We went over the homework and then I briefly introduced taking a molecule and breaking it down into how many atoms are in each molecule. This is a fairly easy process. I am hoping that the homework activity, which the students look around the house, they will see the relation chemistry has in everyday life. My plan is to send home a test this next week. We will follow the same procedure as previous. I will also send home grades thus far. Please feel free to keep the lines of communication open. Love to hear comments and suggestions.

Happy Heart Day

Hope you all had an enjoyable day with your valentine!!

HOMEWORK:
Monday: What determines the rate of rusting?
1. Place several iron nails on wet paper towel, and cover with another wet paper towel.
2. On a separate paper towel repeat the above, except sprinkle salt liberally on the nails and paper towels.
3. Allow both to remain undisturbed till Wednesday. At the end of this period, observe and compare the amount of rusting for each.

Tuesday: Finish Bonding Basics Review worksheet.

Wednesday: Look at both iron nails. Draw both iron nails and write a sentence on each describing the amount of rusting.

Thursday: Finish Section B and Section C worksheets. Study for quiz!!

CLASS:
We completed our experiment with our electron hats-pics to follow:) We then did many examples with ionic and covalent bonding. Please keep me posted with questions or comments!

See you tomorrow HAT HEADS!!

Sorry guys I have not been able to connect to the internet today-I just now was able to get on. See you tomorrow!! Looking forward to taking some pictures of the electron hats tomorrow!

Valence Electron Hats

Homework:
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: I sent home two worksheets a crossword puzzle and an bonding worksheet. Please complete the crossword puzzle. We were not able to cover as much material in class as I hoped, therefore, if the bonding worksheet is confusing DO NOT worry about completing it. We will finish up our discussion this Friday and everything will make perfect sense:)
Thursday: Please study for the quiz!!

Class Re-Cap:
We dived into discussion of valence electrons (electrons in the outer shell). The importance of this lies in how elements bond. After our discussion and some examples we began assembling our valence electron hats. We only did one brief sample with the hats and will do more this Friday-Pictures to follow!!

Have a stupendous week!

QUIZ!!!!!

STUDENTS!!!
OK everyone- I believe we are having difficulty studying for quizzes??? Therefore my gift to you this lovely Thursday is to give you the questions #1-5 for the quiz tomorrow. I challenge you to learn to study. You are in middle school now and with this comes responsibility. Everyone knows every Friday we have a 5 point quiz covering last weeks notes, yet each week most of you look at me like I'm and alien when I ask you a question????? So this once I am giving you the questions-in hopes this will help you look at your notes and see where I am pulling these questions from.

I know you ALL have it in you. Step up and make your parents and me proud. Most importantly honor the Lord with the good brain He has given you. Learn how to use this amazing gift which each of you have.

With the lecture being over here are the questions for tomorrows quiz:
1. What is the name of group 2 on the periodic table?
2. What is the name of group3-12 on the periodic table?
3. Give me one characteristic of a non-metal.
4. Give me one characteristic of a metal.
5. What is a metalloid?

Parents- All these questions were discussed in class and written on the board to be copied in notes. Please take time to look a your child's notes to make sure they are getting everything. Please communicate if you see areas of struggle with your child.

Looking forward to seeing each of you tomorrow and stretching our brains with the wonderful concept of chemical bonding:)
